Pierluigi Billone (1960*) studied the classical guitar and composition in Milan, chamber music with Alain Meunier in Siena, and composition with Salvatore Sciarrino in Città di Castello and Helmut Lachenmann in Stuttgart.
His music has been performed at festivals such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Wien Modern, and New Music Days in Zurich, by ensembles and soloists such as Ensemble Contrechamps, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Varianti, Neue Vocalsolisten, SWR Vokalensemble, WDR Symphony, Barbara Maurer, and Emilio Pomarico.
Ebe und anders for seven soloists (2014)
The particular instrumental ensemble (trumpet, trombone, two percussions, electric guitar, piano, and cello) offers the possibility of a musical hierarchies and assignment of clear roles to each instrument.
In this case, the trumpet and trombone are the leading soloists and play together as a single instrument, as often happens in Billone’s ensemble music with soloists.
Therefore the piece develops as a ritualised sound travel through the—known and unknown—expression possibilities of both instruments. Besides experimental techniques, there are also frozen traces of jazz.
Ebe und anders is dedicated to the trombone and trumpet player of Klangforum Wien, and friends, Andreas Eberle and Anders Nyqvist.
The world premiere will take place in Wrocław during the 2014 World Music Days.
